Member Spotlight: Erin Reed

As a member of SMPS for five years, what has been your favorite part about being involved?

The people. SMPS offers such a unique network of marketers both locally and nationwide. I typically meet someone new at every event I attend and being the sole marketer in Deacon’s Portland office, having resources I can call to talk through ideas with at any time has been extremely valuable.

What do you enjoy the most about your current role at your company?

I enjoy the variety. My role at Deacon Construction has evolved quite a bit during my time with the firm. Currently my time is focused on marketing materials, proposal strategy and implementation, social media content, client events, tradeshows and conventions and office events. More recently I have also become a co-chair of our Portland office Giving Committee which is an extension of our Deacon Charitable Foundation. A general contractor having a foundation is a unique aspect of Deacon and one that I really enjoy.

What is one important skill that you think everyone should have?

Just one? But there are so many! I would say how to accept criticism. I think the initial response is to assume personal failure when a mistake is made. But if you can teach yourself to see mistakes as learning opportunities instead, it makes them—and the inevitable criticism that comes with them—so much easier to handle. I am a work in progress on this ????

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see cast as you?

Reese Witherspoon. While she has played a wide variety of character on screen, it’s her ambition off screen that truly fascinates me.

What is the first thing you would buy if you won the lottery?

The obvious boring stuff first like pay off debt, save enough for my kids to go to college without loans and invest. Then the fun stuff, buy our dream house, travel like crazy and give to charitable organizations.
