A Message from Angie Cole, Chapter President

Dear SMPS Oregon Members,

I am honored and consider it a great privilege to serve as your Chapter President for the 2020-2021 fiscal year. SMPS has played an important role in my career development over the past five years and I take great pleasure in knowing that we have an opportunity to help empower all of you, our members, to advance your careers.

2020 has been an unprecedented year of ups and downs and I know that the current environment presents many unique challenges, but we have assembled an outstanding and experienced board of directors and we look forward to tackling these issues head-on as a team. Where some see obstacles, I see opportunities. That’s why this year we have come up with creative solutions to address how we will engage the market while following safety protocols. While we hope that a vaccine will be available by the beginning of the year, we want to be proactive in planning for all eventualities.

In addition to the ongoing pandemic, we want to make note of the current social justice movement as we have a national reckoning with regard to race relations. SMPS is not isolated from the conversation and we intend to be active in addressing the need for more diversity within the chapter. As you may have heard or seen, we have created a new Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (J.E.D.I.) committee. The J.E.D.I. Director will lead our chapter’s diversity and inclusion efforts, ensuring that the organization is attracting and retaining exemplary members and volunteers while also creating opportunities for growth and professional development.

We also want to be sure that we stay engaged with one another and that everyone feels involved with the organization. I, and the board, am committed to transparency, proactive outreach, and a better understanding of what our members want to get out of their participation in SMPS. We will introduce the following initiatives in order to meet these obligations:

  1. We are asking all of our members to please complete the survey, found here. The survey will help us understand what you are most interested in getting out of SMPS this year. As a bonus, two of you will be randomly selected as winners of a $50 Amazon gift card.
  2. We have built an event calendar that is available for you to download here. The calendar showcases all of the events for the coming year and should help all of us keep track of important events.
  3. SMPS Oregon is making Slack our main source of communication and we will be inviting our membership to join us on slack to ensure open communication and transparency in the chapter.
  4. The chapter is fortunate enough to have a number of past presidents offering to serve as mentors to the board and various committees. We will take full advantage of this opportunity and look forward to learning from their past experiences.
  5. We have established a “Past Presidents’ Council” that will meet bi-annually to help with the leadership transitions
  6. In an effort to ensure the safety of everyone involved, we are going to be hosting events virtually until local government and health officials declare it safe to have in person events
  7. We are looking forward to hosting “Fireside Chats” twice a year where our members can join me, and the occasional guest, to discuss any ideas or concerns they have for the chapter
  8. As President I want to encourage everyone to volunteer on a committee so that they can get the most out of their time with SMPS
  9. This year’s Annual Awards will look a bit different this year. Submissions for awards consideration will now be due in October. This will allow us to spend a week per award promoting the submissions and the winner in each category on our chapter website and on social media.

Those of you who know me, know that I am a strong believer in collaboration and teamwork. I plan for us to work collectively towards our shared mission of creating opportunities for growth in the A/E/C industry. I have an “open door” policy and welcome your feedback at any time, should you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly.

In closing, I am excited to start our new SMPS year and thrilled to have a group of such talented professionals to support our chapter. Thank you all for being a part of our community and welcome to our new and exciting year!

  Angie Cole, President
